Project Inspector (Entry level/recent grad-inspection/construction)

Milhouse Engineering & Construction, Inc. is an Engineering and Architecture professional full service consulting firm offering a full spectrum of engineering design services including civil, construction, electrical, environmental, mechanical, and structural as well as construction management services and complementary architectural services. These services are provided across multiple markets including Aviation, Construction, Education, Energy, Healthcare, Transportation and Water Waste/Water.

OVERALL OBJECTIVE: 

Inspects home during construction for compliance to plans and specifications, and measures quantities of all installed materials.
 
JOB COMPLEXITY/SCOPE: 

Responsible for ensuring that construction is in compliance.
 
SUPERVISION:

Normally follows established procedures on routine work, requires detailed instructions on new assignments.  Assignments are made by a supervisor but work is carried out without direct supervision. 
 
 
JOB DUTIES: Performs the below duties and all other duties as assigned:

  • Assist with field measurement appointments if necessary.  
  • Inspect all materials delivered to home to verify they are in accordance with the approved material submittals, construction modification documents, and RSIP specifications.
  • Inspect the homes under construction to verify work is being performed in accordance with the specifications and notify the project manager of any non-compliance. 
  • Complete a daily progress report for each home under construction. 
  • Verify the operation of all windows and doors.
  • Measure quantities and initiate field orders, deletions, and proposals.
  • Record quantities of line item work installed in the homes.
  • Prepare HVAC duct quantities and generate poundage weight report utilizing the Quote Soft computer program.
  • Complete QA/QC checklist for each home, as well as alert the project manager of any quality or safety violations of the contractor.
  • Conduct punch list inspection with contractor and homeowner.
  • Assist Project Manager with final inspection with contractor and homeowner if needed.


 
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associates degree preferred and 0-2 years of construction management or inspection experience is required, preferably in home construction.
  • Home inspection certificate a plus.
  • Must have own car and insurance and ability to drive up to 300 miles per month.
  • Ability to use a computer, the Internet, and project scheduling, word processing, spreadsheet, and email software.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Job duties in an office setting require the following:  

  • Ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to move throughout the office.
  • The ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Good hand-eye coordination; the ability to reach with hands and arms; and arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp.
  • Close visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate office equipment, prepare and review data and figures, and view a computer monitor.
  • The ability to talk and hear.
  • The ability to work in an upper level of a high-rise office building (Cotter Chicago office and some client offices).
  • The ability to handle temperature changes consistent with inside environmental conditions.
  • Mental abilities including remembering, reasoning, concentrating to remain on task, reading, problem solving, managing concurrent tasks, and the ability to understand and follow directions.

 
For job duties that require visiting a construction work site, the following is required:

  • Normal color vision.
  • The ability to ascend and descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, etc., using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
  • The ability to move across uneven surfaces and the ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling on uneven or slippery surfaces.
  • The ability to stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • The ability to stand for sustained periods of time.
  • The ability to work in confined spaces and narrow passageways. 
  • The ability to work in high places.
  • The ability to handle outside environmental conditions including extreme heat, extreme cold, loud noise levels, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and oils.
